It's Kids Play! The Key to Safety On and Around Neighborhood Streets

The mission of KEEP KIDS ALIVE DRIVE 25® is to
make streets safer for all who walk, cycle, play, drive, and ride.

Think about this - if kids were out playing all over your neighborhood, would it change the way you drive? Children need to be out and about the neighborhood playing, as they did in past generations. The key to safety is a relationship between motorists, kids at play, pedestrians, and bicyclists. Do we have the will to re-create neighborhood environments that foster these relationships, and at the same time promote healthy living along with safe driving, pedestrian, play, and cycling behaviors?

ATTENTIVE DRIVING!

The mission of KEEP KIDS ALIVE DRIVE 25® is to
make streets safer for all who walk, cycle, play, drive, and ride.
Doing so preserves lives and relationships.

We are all too familiar with "distracted" and "aggressive" driving. What if the opposite were true? That we would embrace and practice "attentive driving."

Attentive driving i
s about all focusing on the one complex task at hand - driving!

Attentive drivers...

...don't give in to the temptation of cellular devices, including hands-free. We know that the brain power needed to conduct a cellular conversation/communication means that if we utilize these devices while driving, we have been officially rendered "drunk" - at least in terms of ability to react to what is going on around them on the road, or even the roadside. We turn off cell phones, or even toss it in the trunk if needed. There'll be plenty of time to talk once arriving at our destination.

..notice the presence of kids at play or pedestrians on the sidewalk and make sure the coast is completely clear before backing out of a driveway or parking space

...notice the presence of seat belts and buckle up everyone, every trip, no matter the distance

... notice speed limit signs in neighborhoods and beyond and adhere to posted speed limits, or go even slower due to the presence of children at play, pedestrians, or cyclists.

...notice children at play, and slow down accordingly

...notice pedestrians, and slow down or stop accordingly

...notice cyclists, and slow down accordingly (and cyclists can join in by being "attentive cyclists" and observe all rules of the road as well)

...notice and observe traffic signals and do not run red lights or make turns without stopping to make sure that crosswalks are cleared as well as that no motor vehicles or cyclists with the right-of-way are approaching

...use our peripheral vision to notice everything going around us on every roadway (use of cellular devices shuts down peripheral vision)

Pay attention! Practice attentive driving each and every trip. The life you preserve might just be your own, or that of

I Can't Stop Myself! So, Let's Get Rid of Stop Signs!

According to research by Safe Kids Worldwide, almost 90% of drivers do not correctly stop at stop signs. That is, we do not Stop! Take 3 To See

What would happen if all stop signs were removed? Would chaos ensue? Or would we become more mindful drivers? Would we as motorists practice Stop! Take 3 To See more often?

STOP! TAKE 3 TO SEE
  1. Come to a full and complete stop - wheels completely still.
  2. Look left. Look right. Look left again to make sure all is clear before proceeding.
  3. Look for pedestrians/bicyclists and wave them through until they are safely across the street before proceeding.
What are your thoughts?

Safe travels,

Acoustic Driving - Live & Unplugged

The mission of KEEP KIDS ALIVE DRIVE 25® is to
make streets safer for all who walk, cycle, play, drive, and ride.
Doing so preserves lives and relationships.

Could "Acoustic Driving" be the new rage? (Not Road Rage!)

What is "Acoustic Driving?"

It is a revolutionary concept called "driving unplugged" - no cellular or other electronic devices activated that cause/add to distractions. It's about focusing on the one complex task at hand - driving!

What happens to acoustic drivers?

They...

...notice the presence of kids at play or pedestrians on the sidewalk and make sure the coast is completely clear before backing out of a driveway or parking space

...notice that there are seat belts in their vehicle and buckle up every trip, no matter the distance
