Keeping Kids Alive On and Around Motorcycles

Motorcycle safety - and the safety of all motorists was the catalyst for initiating "It's Not A Race! Create™" Space in honor of James Davis - See "It's Not A Race! Create Space™."

In the spirit of building upon concern for the safety of cyclists and all who encounter riders on roadways of all kinds, Gina Williams, blogger for Motorcycle Accident, shares this guest blog. Please add your comments and questions to get a discussion going.

Children on Motorcycles

People of all ages love riding motorcycles. However, motorcycles can be dangerous to anyone who rides them. This is especially true for children, who have a tendency to do things that could put them at risk, do not know what safety precautions to take, and who, in the event of an accident, would not be able to get out from under a bike. Here are steps you should take if you plan on taking a child on your motorcycle.

Children Need Protective Gear

Regardless of your state’s helmet laws, your child should wear a helmet at all times; it is perhaps the most important piece of equipment anyone on a motorcycle can wear. His/her helmet should fit properly and be Department of Transportation (DOT) approved. Additionally, just like protective gear is important for you to wear when you ride, it is also imperative that your child wear clothing that completely covers his/her arms and legs, gloves, and proper shoes; shoes should either be double knotted and laces stored or should not have laces, as loose laces could cause distraction or an accident.

Children Need to Ride on the Back of the Bike

It is much safer for a child to ride behind the motorcycle driver for several reasons. First, children are more likely to fall off if riding in front of the driver in the event of an accident; there aren’t many places of a child to hold onto in front. Second, a child in the front of the driver could serve as a distraction to the driver. Third, a child in front of the driver could restrict a driver’s movements and, thus, the driver’s ability to avoid an accident; it could even be the cause of an accident.

Have a Conversation with the Child

Always be sure that your child is ready to ride. Wanting to ride and being ready are two totally different things. A child must reach a certain level of maturity in order to be able to listen to and apply instructions. If you feel like your child is mature enough, here are a few things you need to go over with him/her before riding:

1. Do not make sudden movements.

2. Do not distract the driver.

3. Where to hold onto and where not to hold onto.

4. The importance of holding on at all times.

5. Stay seated at all times.

6. Stay facing forward at all times.

7. Never remove your helmet.

8. Which places on the bike get hot after it has been running.

Maturity, however, isn’t the only factor to take into consideration. Height is also important. When a child rides a motorcycle, they must be able to properly hold on. It is IMPERATIVE that your child be able to reach the motorcycle’s pegs/floor boards to be truly secure on it. Each motorcycle is different, but usually between the ages of 6 and 10, children are tall enough to do this.

Your Preparation

Ensure that your bike is child-ready before ever allowing your child to get on it. Children need a good, secure, and accessible place to hold onto and to put their feet.

Also, don’t immediately start taking long trips when your child is new to riding on a motorcycle. Slowly increase the length of trips. This will allow you and your child to become more comfortable; it will also allow your child to become familiar with riding, the equipment, and safety procedures.

Know What to Expect

Children have shorter attention spans, move more, and talk more than adult passengers; they are also more at risk if they fall asleep on the bike, which many of us do as passengers. You need to be more aware than you normally would with a child passenger. If you find that having your child on your bike with you is too much of a distraction, then your child might not be ready to be a passenger.

Each time you did so in 2011 helped keep kids of all ages – we’re all someone’s daughter or son – alive. May these behaviors continue to protect you and others on every road you travel in 2012.

These behaviors reinforce many of the successes enjoyed by Keep Kids Alive Drive 25^® in the past year. These include:

· Our Traffic Safety Pilot Project in cooperation with neighborhood associations and schools in South Omaha, Nebraska. Law enforcement, traffic engineering students at the University of Nebraska-Omaha, the Mammel and UPS Foundations all contributed to this project to engage residents as a front-line solution to speeding concerns in their neighborhoods.

· The kick-off of “America’s Trash Talks to Keep Kids Alive.” GECIO’s regional office in Florida and AAA Nebraska’s Cornhusker Motor Club Foundation joined in as our first two partners in this project. We look forward to adding more corporations and foundations in this major initiative in 2012.

· 16 communities representing 10 States launched initiatives in conjunction with our 5^th Annual Keep Kids Alive Drive 25 Day on May 1^st. New Berlin, Wisconsin leads the way as a city that has expanded their Keep Kids Alive campaign every year for 12 years – truly a remarkable feat.
· The Distributive Education Club of America (DECA) class at Millard South High School in Omaha, NE is the first to create an in-school marketing campaign to promote safe driving among students and their family members. You can do so in your schools; visit A License to Live.

This is just a starter list of all the good that Keep Kids Alive Drive 25^® continues to support in educating and engaging citizens across the U.S. about how we can each make a difference to keep everyone safe on and around roadways of all kinds. As 2011 winds down I want to thank you for each and every action you have taken to help realize the mission of KEEP KIDS ALIVE DRIVE 25^®. Every time you observed the speed limit, stopped at a stop sign, buckled up, turned off and set your cell phone aside, and so many other actions, you contributed to the safety of others, along with yourself, each time you drove. I am grateful for every citizen who posted one of our KEEP KIDS ALIVE messages on a trashcan, via a yard sign, or on a car or window decal, as well as all who have donated financially to support the mission.

For over thirteen years KEEP KIDS ALIVE DRIVE 25^®has led the way in communities of all sizes in addressing neighborhood traffic safety concerns. No other organization is designed to do what KEEP KIDS ALIVE DRIVE 25^® does. To date, we have worked with and through over 400 law enforcement agencies, as well as hundreds of neighborhood and civic organizations, schools, public works and neighborhood services, and businesses in over 1,300 communities representing 49 states, 2 Canadian Provinces, the Bahamas, Australia, and India. Our mission and message resonate with traffic safety advocates and educators across the globe.

In the midst of a challenging economy, this past year we have supported new and expanding campaigns in 75 communities representing 21 states. Truly our message and mission are taking root and making a difference in communities large and small. We have managed to support these efforts on a budget of $84,000.00 for the 2010-11 fiscal year. With the support of our board of directors, we continue to squeeze every last drop out of funds available to make a difference on neighborhood streets (and beyond) from coast to coast.

Along the way we have met many families who have been directly affected by the death of a loved one due to a traffic incident. These families have become special partners with us in helping to create safer roadways to benefit everyone in their community – and sometimes beyond. We have been privileged to honor these loved ones each August for the past 5 years through our “Run to Remember” as part of the Pikes Peak Ascent Trail Race.

Be Aware! Drive With Care - Keep Yourself and All Around You Alive this Winter

Tips to Keep You, Your Loved Ones, and All You Encounter Safe on Roadways Throughout the Winter

The following is a guest post written by Stuart A. Carpey of the Philadelphia personal injury law firm Kreithen, Baron & Carpey.

With winter upon us it is a good idea for drivers to start planning for the hazards which accompany icy, sleety, and snowy roads. To begin preparing for winter driving, you should assess your car or truck to make sure your vehicle is ready to meet the elements.

Make Sure…

Your windshield wipers are in good shape and are functioning properly. Visibility is essential when driving in the snow.
Your tires are in good shape, and have air in them. Your tires lose air faster in cold weather.
You have anti-freeze, oil, and power steering fluid.
You visit a mechanic to have your brakes, hoses, and belts checked.

Even after you have made sure that your car is in the proper condition, you should plan for the possibility of an emergency. Other drivers may not have taken the precautions that you have, which means you are still at risk for an accident caused by someone else. Do your best to prepare for an accident on snowy roads.

Make Sure You Have…

A shovel to dig your car out if and when it gets stuck in the snow.
A set of jumper cables. Car batteries tend to lose power faster in cold weather.
Warm clothes in the car. In the event that you are stranded and waiting for assistance, your clothes may get wet from the surrounding snow, which makes a spare sweater, hat, gloves, and a blanket essential for staving off frostbite, hypothermia, or other ailments.
An ice scraper and snow brush to help optimize visibility.
A first aid kit in case of an injury.

Remember that if the roads are in poor condition, the safest thing you can do is not drive. However, if you must drive, check your local TV and radio stations for up-to-date information on the state of roads. And, as always, be careful and patient. Remember, Be Aware! A “B+” may not be the highest grade, but it’s a perfectly wonderful blood type, although rare. Only about 9% of us have a B+ “B positive” blood type.

When is comes to driving, though, 100% of us can embrace the need to “B positive” - that is our driving behaviors need to be positive. So as we head out on roadways of all types this Thanksgiving, let’s make the grade a “B+” by:

Taking a walk around your car before backing up or driving forward. Make sure the coast truly is clear of children, pets, toys, etc
Buckling up everyone, every trip, no matter the distance– Seat Belts – FASTENATING!®
Observing the speed limit, going slower as conditions dictate – No Need To Speed®
Putting away all cell phones and other distractions – Hang Up and Drive and Be Aware! Drive With Care®
Not tailgating – It’s Not A Race! Create Space®
Observing Stop signs correctly – Stop! Take 3 To See®
Observing all traffic signals and signs.

Do all these and have a “B+” day every day you are behind the wheel.

Halloween Most Dangerous Night-Keep Kids Alive!

Dear Friends,

Just a quick note to highlight a couple of facts from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA):

-Halloween has the highest number of child pedestrian deaths. These typically occur on residential streets
-It also has the highest number of DUI-related crash 
fatalities

What can we do? Here are tips from the California Office for Traffic Safety

For tricker-treaters:

-Plan your route ahead of time on well-lit streets. Avoid busy streets.
-Choose a costume that makes it easier to walk, see and be seen. Light color costumes are best.
-Select costumes, masks, wigs or beards made of flame-retardant materials. Avoid flimsy, lightweight fabrics and costumes with billowing skirts or loose, baggy sleeves.
-A mask may keep kids from seeing well. Consider using makeup instead of a mask for added safety.
-It's best to trick-or-treat when it's still light outside, but a flashlight can help trick-or-treaters be seen.
-Use reflective tape on costumes.

For drivers:

-Avoid driving through residential areas where trick-or-treaters are likely to be present.
-Obey all traffic signs and signals. The risk of killing a pedestrian increases more than many people realize with just small increases in speed. A pedestrian is nearly twice as likely to be killed if he or she is hit by a car going 30 mph compared to if they're hit at 25 mph. 
-Watch for children walking on roadways, medians and curbs, and in dark costumes — they'll be harder to see at night. Also, be aware that trick-or-treaters may not be paying attention to traffic and may run out mid-block or between parked cars. Motorists should scan far ahead when driving in residential areas, watch for children and cautiously monitor their actions. Turn on your headlights to make yourself more visible — even in daylight.
-Plan ahead if you will be drinking. Designate a sober driver. If you are already out and have had too much to drink, call a taxi, friend or family to drive you home.
-Party hosts should have plenty of food on hand for everyone throughout the evening and several non-alcoholic drink choices for the designated drivers. 
-Don't allow anyone to leave if you have any doubts about their ability to drive.

Who Do You Love? Who Loves You?

Exits and entries; we make dozens of these each day. What we say to those we care for can make all the difference when they leave home, are dropped off for school or work, and again when they return home.

Many of these exits involve leaving home, school, or other location by motor vehicle. Each exit is an invitation to simply let those we care for know they are loved. A simple way to do so is to say, "Remember you are loved," each time a loved one parts our company. These words may make all the difference. Try it today, tomorrow, and every day.

And remember to reflect that love in word and action when those we care for return home. This truly allows them to know they are loved the next time they hear the words, "Remember you are loved."

They are our daughters, sons, brothers, sisters, moms, dads. They die on every kind of roadway, from the neighborhood street to the highway.

When we think about it, every road we travel leads to memory lane - the place that held the possibilities, the hopes, the dreams, of those that every family that has experienced the death of a loved one due to a traffic incident recall each day. We may not think about these loved ones each time we take to the road, but their memories are indeed present on just about any stretch of road we travel.

How can you honor the memory of every loved one who had died in a traffic incident? I suggest that we do so every time we act in a courteous and safe manner behind the wheel or while a passenger in a motor vehicle. All you have to do is:

Be Aware! Drive With Care - Notice what is going on around as you drive - people walking, riding, children at play - and slow down or adjust other behaviors accordingly.

You care by walking around our vehicle before getting in and starting the engine. Make sure no children are around who may be hit as we back up or move forward.

You care by buckling up and making sure all passengers do so as well.

You care by putting away your cell phone - no talking, no texting. The research is in; even talking on a cell phone - hands-free or otherwise - causes one to drive more erratically than driving under the influence at .08 - legally drunk.

You care by observing speed limits, stop signs and traffic signals. We remember the words of Tia's dad, "Don't let the 2 minutes you save be the last 2 minutes of someone's life." He uttered these words in the wake of Tia's death - hit while crossing in a marked crosswalk at a stop sign. The first driver stopped. The one behind him decide to go around, hitting Tia and her friend, who luckily survived.

You care by creating space between your vehicle and others around you. A rule of thumb; allow 3 seconds of space between you and the vehicle ahead of you. Find a fixed object - a pole, a bridge, a sign - make sure that 3 seconds pass before you pass that object after vehicle in front of you passes that same object.

As you head out on the road, make every trip worthy of a drive down memory lane in honor of all who have died on roadways of every kind.

The quote from David Townsend came in the aftermath of Tia's, death at age 11. Tia and a friend were crossing the street in a marked crosswalk at a stop sign in Shoreline, Washington. The first car to approach the sign/crosswalk stopped. The motorist behind him decided to pull around him - hitting and killing Tia and injuring her friend.

Ashley Steffen, age 17, of Waukesha, WI was standing in her driveway waiting for the school bus. A classmate raced down here 25 mph posted street at almost 60 mph, lost control, smashing into Ashley and ending her life.

Shaye Martin, age 8, was walking to school on the sidewalk in a designated school zone in Doral, FL when a motorist sped through at 60 mph, jumped the curb, running him over and ending his life.

David Townsend's message, along with the desire of Ashley's and Shaye's families to never have another family endure what they have experienced, should resonate with every one of us each time we get behind the wheel. Our behavior behind the wheel makes a life or death difference. Which behaviors do we choose to engage in?

9/11 - Diminished and Challenged to Keep All Loved Ones Alive

Death diminishes and challenges us all, no matter what the circumstances.

As we observe the 10th Anniversary of 9/11, memorial services are held in communities of all sizes across our country. Even some NFL players wear specially designed gear in support of families who experienced the loss of a loved one on that day, or in the ensuing conflicts that have been fought in Afghanistan, and Iraq. Thousands have died, and whether each of us personally new these victims, we along with their families are diminished due to the loss of the love and service they would have continued to share with family, friends, and others in need throughout our world.

I am reminded, too, that over 350,000 loved ones have died during the past 10 years on our nations roadways. Their family and friends also grieve the loss of love, friendship, and service that their children, siblings, parents, cousins, friends undoubtedly would have shared had they lived.

How are all the deaths of these loved ones connected? Quite simply, the death of anyone we care for, and who cared for us, is never easy, and we are all diminished by what might have been had they lived - through the tragedies of the Twin Towers, Shanksville, and the Pentagon, to the battlefields of the Middle East, to the death of a child at the hands of a speeding, texting, or stop-sign running driver. We imagine a high school graduation, a wedding, a future grandchild, a hug, an "I love you," a hike in the mountains together, sharing holidays and birthdays, and so much more. We often grieve for the possibilities of the future, for what could have been.

Within our sorrow, we are left not only with memories, but also of the challenge of new possibilities - of what we each can do to create a legacy in remembering all the life and love a daughter, son, brother, sister, mother, father, friend has shared with us. Over the 13 years that I have worked to grow Keep Kids Alive Drive 25, I have encountered families who, like many of the survivors of the tragedies of 9/11, work to bring great good into our world in memory of their loved one. In addition, these families have enacted redeeming actions on behalf of drivers, pedestrians and cyclists in memory of their loved ones:

Sean Martin has tirelessly worked with local officials and schools in Miami Lakes, FL in honor of his son, Shaye, struck by a speeding motorist while walking on the sidewalk in a school zone. Shaye's photo appears on the above banner.
Barbara Foster, along with her State Representative and many friends worked to see "Kyle's Law" through to passage to allow Texas communities to more easily lower their residential speed limits.
Karen Steffan initiated Keep Kids Alive Drive 25 in Waukesha, WI in honor of Ashley - whose photo appears on the banner above.
Natalie DeLeon's mother, Beatriz, daily efforts working with Massachusetts legislators to enact a primary seat belt law in her honor.
The Henry family of Yardville, NJ set up an educational scholarship in honor of Anthony. This year they awarded 10 scholarships in Anthony's name.
The Diffenderfers of Perkiomenville, PA created a butterfly garden for the community in honor of 2 year-old Anna.
The Faust family of Lees Summit, MO doggedly worked to address engineering challenges that factored in to Justin's death.
The Lloyd family of Omaha set up a scholarship fun in honor of Shannon to support one or more classmates upon their graduation from high school in 2012.

These efforts in memory of loved ones join today, and each day, with the families of all who have ever experienced the tragic death of a loved one. As we embrace the life we have been given, each of us is challenged each day to live a life worthy of creating a legacy that can benefit others. We can start by paying attention to our interactions within our families, among our neighbors, and with as we meet folks we might ordinarily think of as strangers. Building a legacy begins with courtesy, with manners, with consideration. We can even include our driving behaviors, which can make all the difference in keeping others, and ourselves, safe and alive on and around roadways of all kinds. Success! A "Run to Remember" to Keep Kids Alive

"America the Beautiful" monument on the summit of Pikes Peak. Katherine Lee Bates wrote the song "America the Beautiful" while on the summit of Pikes Peak in 1893. The Pikes Peak Ascent always begins with a rendition of this hymn to America. It is inspiring.

Just returned from Colorado and the "Run to Remember" as part of the
Pikes Peak Ascent Trail Race - 13.32 grueling miles up a single-track trail with a 7,800 foot elevation change. It all peaks out at 14,115 feet above sea level at the summit.

6 Eversons - my 3 sons (no, not Rob, Chip and Ernie!), 2 of my brothers, and yours truly completed the race. We ran to remember 51 loved ones who have died in traffic incidents. Their family and friends commissioned us to carry the memory and spirit of the love they shared, and continue to share, with all who love them. We were honored to do so.

Through the years, over 1,000 of these shirts have been distributed to family members of those we run to remember. On race day - August 20th this year - they wear these shirts in solidarity with us as we ascend Pikes Peak. All shirts are paid for through the generosity of our donors, who help to make the "Run to Remember" possible.

Sean Everson, age 19, stands on the 14,115 foot summit of Pikes Peak after a great first-time "Run to Remember." Sean's face reflects the effort involved in climbing 7,815 feet in elevation over the 13.32 mile course on a single-track trail (wide enough for one person).

"Drive 25 Campaign" to Keep Kids Alive

The "Drive 25 Campaign" coincides with the 13th birthday of Keep Kids Alive Drive 25.

Over the past 13 years we have been privileged to work with over 1,300 communities representing 49 states in creating safer neighborhood streets for the benefit of all. Along the way, we have connected with many families who have adopted our mission in the wake of the death of a loved one due to a traffic incident. It is always a special privilege to partner with these families to bring greater good into the world in memory of their loved one. Keep Kids Alive Drive 25 is the only non-profit in the country that targets neighborhood traffic safety, as well as a host of other traffic safety concerns, along with support of families of victims of motor vehicle incidents.

With our mission in mind, we are working to build a funding base that will allow us to expand the reach and scope of our work in the years ahead. In doing so, we are presenting 3 opportunities for individuals to support our mission. These include:

Becoming a monthly donor for $10.00 or more (each month) through the Network for Good Giving System. Our page can be found at KKAD25 Network for Good. An option is to do this through a bank draft which can be set up at most banks to be sent out each month.
Becoming a donor to support our annual "Run to Remember" team as part of the Pike's Peak Ascent Trail Race. This fundraiser supports the families of loved ones who have died in traffic incidents. This past August 20th was our 5th "Run to Remember." We worked to raise $7,800 - $1.00 for each foot of elevation change from the beginning of the race at 6,300 ft. altitude to the summit of Pike's Peak at 14, 115 ft. This year we ran to remember 51 loved ones representing 49 families from across the country. Keep Kids Alive"

"America's Trash Talks to Keep Kids Alive" is the latest initiative from Keep Kids Alive Drive 25.

The premise is simple; to get the "Keep Kids Alive" message out on the side of every trash can in America - both curbside and in alleys.

We welcome you to partner – through your neighborhood/homeowners association, local trash hauler, business, school, faith community, or civic organization (or all of these organizations working together).

How?

Through use of Keep Kids Alive Drive 25®, Be Aware! Drive With Care®, No Need To Speed®, and Check Your Speed® decals. The goal is to decal every trash can on every neighborhood street and alleyway in America

Why?

To reduce motor vehicle deaths and injuries. It's that simple - get all citizens involved in sending out one or more of the "Keep Kids Alive" safety messages in order to create safer roadway environments for the benefit of pedestrians and cyclists of all ages, as well as motorists themselves. (The City of Oro Valley, AZ applied these decals to trash cans and saw average speeds plummet to 24.5 mph on residential streets - a 13% decrease.)

What is needed?

Partners - environmental waste companies, insurance companies, local businesses, schools, faith communities, and civic organizations to partner with Keep Kids Alive Drive 25 in implementing this goal in communities nationwide.

What is the role of partners?

Examples include the following:

Environmental waste companies that provide trash and recycling bins to municipalities and neighborhoods add one or more of the Keep Kids Alive messages via decals on the side of all trash/recycling bin.
Insurance companies utilize agents to distribute decals to policyholders. These decals can integrate company logos into decals in order to recognize sponsorship
Local businesses can sponsor decals and distribute through customer service, check out lanes, service counters, as well as through employees. Businesses can be recognized by integrating company logos into decals to recognize sponsorship
Schools and civic organizations can distribute decals to families and members. Civic organizations can partner as local/regional/national sponsors as well

Practicing Courtesy to Keep Kids Alive

This morning at a local YMCA I noticed a lesson that can be applied to our driving behaviors.

An older gentleman held the door open for a troop of kids participating in summer camp. The first 10 or so walked through without saying a word. Then, one young boy - probably 7 years-old - said "thank you." Every child who followed him thanked the man for holding the door. That young boy had set courtesy in motion with two simple words - thank you.

Opportunities present themselves every day to start a wave of courtesy on roadways throughout the world. What do these opportunities look like?

They look like stopping at stop signs, using turn signals, obeying speed limits, and setting cell phones aside to concentrate on the task at hand - driving.

Every Decision You Make Behind the Wheel Can Keep Kids Alive

A friend shared the following wisdom gained from her high school driver's ed teacher.

When driving, ask:
"Will the decision I am about to make behind the wheel help to keep me and others alive?"
This question can be expanded to concretely address many unsafe driving behaviors, including:
Will turning off my cell phone before I begin driving help to keep me and others alive?

Will wearing a seat belt and expecting others in my vehicle to do so help to keep me and others alive?

Will observing the posted speed limit, and adjusting downward to account for the presence of pedestrians, cyclists, kids at play, and weather conditions help to keep me and others alive?

Will stopping at each and every stop sign and correctly observing all traffic signals and signage help to keep me and others alive?

Will maintaining a safe distance between my vehicle and others around me help to keep me and others alive?

This is just a starter list of questions. What would you add to the list?

A Compassion that Moves Us to Action to Keep Kids Alive

Recently I viewed an on-line video of Krista Tippett on "Reconnecting with Compassion." Her insights challenged me to think about compassion as it relates to the mission and work of Keep Kids Alive Drive 25.

How so?

She shares that "story" is a critical element of compassion. To me this says that sharing our stories is critical to moving us toward action to bring greater good into our world. In the case of Keep Kids Alive Drive 25 I have experienced this great goodness through the families that survive loved ones who have died in motor vehicle incidents. These are mothers, fathers, brothers, sisters, grandparents, aunts, uncles, and cousins who choose to create a legacy of good in our world in memory of their loved one. In doing so they keep their loved one's story alive in a way that calls us all to make a positive difference through our driving behaviors, and, in fact, through the ways we live our whole lives.

There are so many others as well, including the Lynch family setting up a foundation in memory of Conor, the Martin family who work with middle school students to help enact safer school zone laws in Florida in memory of Shaye, the Fosters who worked with legislators, friends, and city officials to enact a new law in Texas in memory of Kyle - and the list goes on.

Each story of these loved ones calls us to a compassionate response when it comes to our own driving behaviors, and, perhaps, in taking the opportunity to simply listen to someone we know who has experienced the death of a loved one. As we all know, but may not always say, the last thing we want to have happen is for others to forget our loved one. Stories keep the love and life they shared, and continue to share, alive.

"Cell-Off" to Keep Everyone Alive!

The 1st Ever National “Cell-Off!”

Keep Kids Alive Drive 25 joins the National Safety Council – Omaha Chapter, the C.A.R. Alliance, and other partners in observing the first national “Cell-Off” on Wednesday, June 29th, 2011.

The goal? Turn off the phone and drive! Just don’t use your cell phone for any reason at all while driving.

It’s amazing what could happen. You can do things like:

Walk around your car to make sure no-one is behind you when backing up or in front of you before going forward – see “Kids and Cars.”
Buckle up – Your hands are free to do so. Remember, “Seat Belts-FASTENATING!”
Observe pedestrians in crosswalks, pedestrians of all ages, cyclists, and so many others
Observe Stop signs correctly – Stop! Take 3 To See
Observe all Traffic signals
Observe posted speed limit signs, going slower when pedestrians/cyclists are present or when weather conditions warrant doing so
Leave plenty of space between your vehicle and others – “It’s Not A Race! Create Space”

This is the opportunity we have all been waiting for – the chance for each of us to refine our driving skills.

Celebrating Life Well-Lived: Keeping Memories Alive

Recently Wendy and I attended a "Celebration of Life and Friendship" in memory of Shannon Lloyd. Shannon died June 5, 2001 at age 7 from internal injuries sustained when she was hit as she began a short journey on her bike to visit a friend. Her mother was but a few feet away, and Shannon wore her helmet. Even so, a tragic incident occurred that impacted many lives.

Each year since her death, Shannon's parents, Anne and Russ, have gathered friends of Shannon together for a 'Celebration of Life and Friendship" in her honor and memory on the Saturday in June closest to June 5th. It has been amazing throughout the years to share this celebration and all the stories shared about Shannon and her continued influence on and presence in the lives of so many.

In my own experience, I have been privileged to have Shannon's life and spirit be a part of our annual "Keep Kids Alive Drive 25 Run to Remember" as part of the Pike's Peak Ascent Trail Race since 2007. Anne intimated that Shannon always liked to tell people to "run like the wind." During our first "Run to Remember," a gentle breeze stirred across my face about half-way up the 13.3 mile trail on Pike's Peak. For me, it was a stirring reminder of Shannon's presence and encouragement. It continues as a fond memory each time I trek the Peak.

Life has been challenging for Shannon's family, as it is for any family moving forward from the gloom and grief of a tragic death. Yet, the celebration of her life and friendship each year re-charges the spirits of all involved reminding us of the goodness and love Shannon shared in her 7 years on earth, and of her continued invitation to us all to be thankful for the blessings of each and every family member and friend that graces our lives each day.

If you are a member of a family who has experienced a sad, tragic death due to a traffic incident, or any other circumstance or illness, perhaps initiating your own celebration of life and love in honor of and memory of your loved one is just what is needed to bring family and friends together. Why? To share fond memories as well as stories about the positive ways that your loved one has influenced, and continues to influence, your life and the lives of so many others.

I believe that when it comes to creating our own celebrations of life that Shannon would like us to take the idea and "run like the wind" to make it happen.

The Joy of Keeping Kids Alive

Recently I heard a story that went like this:

A special education teacher planned a field trip to the beach for his students. Many of them had a difficult time sharing emotions, so he prepared an activity that would help them to do so in an appropriate way on this adventure. This involved writing words in the sand and inviting students to share what the word meant to them.

One of the words was "joy," which sent a student running in ever-expanding circles across the beach, singing, dancing, and leaping all the while.

The teacher asked the boy why he was running all over the beach to describe joy. The boy replied, "because joy is so big that there is not enough room for it."

This child describes something that we all know somewhere inside ourselves - that joy is indeed bigger than ourselves. It can be hard to describe, but we know it when we experience it and when we see it in others.

You might wonder, what does joy have to do with neighborhood traffic safety?

A simple joy is to experience children at play - running, laughing, playing games, riding bikes - just enjoying friends, sisters, brothers in yards, on sidewalks, in

parks, and driveways. The energy and smiles allow us to appreciate what it is

to be a child with few cares and concerns, except to put

every ounce of their energy into play.

These moments help us to recall our own childhood, perhaps when it seemed that we, along with our friends, had the run of the neighborhood. Our playground may way have covered blocks of real estate. And the cost of it all? Just our time, energy, and passion for play.

Thinking back to my own experience of joy and play, I am reminded that we were ever mindful of traffic. There seemed a natural interaction between children playing and motorists. We watched out for each other.

It is the essence of care - watching out for each other - that is at the heart of what the mission of Keep Kids Alive Drive 25 is all about. We can live this care in our neighborhoods today by creating an environment that puts the safety of children first and foremost in creating an atmosphere that encourages and celebrates play. To do so, we must each do our part. This means:

As parents we teach our kids how to safely negotiate neighborhood streets - how to "Stop! Take 3 To See," how to respect boundaries of playing in yards, parks,and playgrounds, leaving the street to motor vehicles and bicycles.

As motorists, we commit to "Be Aware! Drive With Care" each and every time we get behind the wheel and drive through the neighborhood, and beyond. This means that we too must "Stop! Take 3 To See," and to "Keep Kids Alive Drive 25" (drive the posted speed limit or even slower when we see children at play, cyclists, skateboarders, etc.). It is up to us to be mindful of our behaviors while driving. In doing so we work to create a safer environment for ourselves and everyone we encounter along the way. After all, no motorist wants to be be behind the wheel and hit another humanbeing. Yet, when we speed, run stop signs, distract ourselves with cell phones and gadgets of all sorts, food, grooming, and more, we put ourselves in danger of being that driver who hits someone. Data from Virginia Tech's Transportation Institute demonstrates that the 3 seconds before a collision (with a person, another vehicle, or other object) is the critical time that dictates what will or won't happen. If we are speeding, texting or talking on a cell phone, eating, grooming, or any other non-driving activity, we put ourselves and others in harms way.

Developers play a role as well. When new neighborhoods are built or older neighborhoods take on transportation concerns, designing streets, sidewalks, and trails to promote safety for pedestrians, cyclists, and children at play must take top priority. When we put moving motor vehicles at the center of a plan, we fail our children and ourselves. After all, neighborhood streets need never be all about getting from point A to point B as fast and with as few impediments as possible without regard to the "human factor" - the reality that neighborhoods have everything to do with people, and the opportunity to have as high a quality of life as possible. Creating safe neighborhood streets through engineering, law enforcement, and educating towards safe driving behaviors has everything to do with people.

When we put all these pieces together, we are ready to truly heed the words of David Townsend, whose 11 year-old daughter, Tia, died as a result of a motorist who decided not to stop at stop sign and allow her and her friend to finish crossing the street in a marked crosswalk.

Let's all commit to doing what is in our power to do today to keep ourselves and others safe on every neighborhood street, and beyond, in every community in our country (and even the world). In doing so, our lives will indeed be more enjoyable, less frantic, and we will have many opportunities to share joy with the ones we love and the ones who love us. And may these joys continue to radiate in ever-expanding circles on every neighborhood street in your community.

Do You Love to Drive to Keep Kids Alive?

In a recent essay, Jerome Kodell, in part, writes the following:

"Love is not easy to do, but it is quite simple to understand. It means wanting what is best for the other and doing what is best for the other...Love is a matter of decisions and actions. Love is a dying to oneself and one's wishes and preferences, putting the other first."

What do these thoughts have to do with driving?

Quite simply, if we truly "love" to drive, then our behaviors behind the wheel will first and foremost reflect our concern for the lives and safety of others. Our love for driving will set aside desires to see how fast we can go, how quickly we can arrive at a destination, how many people we can talk to or text on our cell phone, how many stop signs and signals we can ignore, how close we can creep up on the driver in front of us without hitting their vehicle, or how we can show the world that we really can drink and drive (and so many other behaviors that put others and ourselves at risk). We will put others first - passengers, pedestrians, cyclists, children at play, other motorists.

Our love for driving reflects itself best when we expect the best from our behavior and drive to keep others (and ourselves) alive. This means we have expectations for both ourselves and others. These include:

-Buckling up every one every trip, no matter the distance

-Making sure children are outfitted with appropriate safety and booster seats

-Checking the area around the entire car, van, truck to make sure that no one is in danger of being backed or run over

-Turning off cell phones. There is no reason to talk or text and drive

-Never drive after consuming alcohol

-Observe speed limits, and drive slower when pedestrians, cyclists, children at play are present

-Stop! Take 3 To See at every stop sign, whether someone is present or not. It's good practice. We only become good at what we repeatedly practice. Stop signs, stop lights, and obeying all traffic signs are great opportunities to put our love for driving into practice each time we are on the road.

-Remember, "It's Not A Race! Create Space." 29% of injury crashes are the result of poor space management, including following too close. Leave a three second cushion between yourself and the vehicle in front of you. Leaving space to react is within your control, and could well save a life - maybe even your own.

WARNING! UNSEEN OBSTACLES & UNKNOWN HAZARDS EXIST. KEEP KIDS ALIVE!

A friend shared his experience of going skiing for the first time. When he exited the ski lift at the top of a run, he encountered a sign, most likely posted on the advice of a well-intentioned lawyer. The sign read:

"WARNING!

UNSEEN OBSTACLES &

UNKNOWN HAZARDS EXIST"

My friend commented that upon seeing this message he thought, "this should be on the wristband of every newborn as they leave the hospital."

How true! As parents we need constant reminders that unseen obstacles and unknown hazards do indeed exist at every stage of development, for both our children and for ourselves as parents.

I think of this as it applies to granting a license to drive to a teenager, or a new driver of any age. This warning of unseen obstacles and unknown hazards existing as we venture on to roadways each day is one that should be etched into every dashboard as a reminder that there is much that we do not control when behind the wheel - especially the driving behavior of others.

However, when we have knowledge - such as this warning - we also have the opportunity, or responsibility, to do all that is in our power to do, to heed the warning and adjust our driving behaviors accordingly. What it comes down to is simple; traffic laws are basically written with knowledge that unseen obstacles and unknown hazards exist each and every time we get behind the wheel. With this in mind, we can act on this knowledge by:

-Obeying speed limits in all speed zones, and going slower whenever we encounter pedestrians, bicyclists, and children playing.

-Creating space between our own vehicle and those around us. After all, we are not actually in a race, so it's okay to create space. The life saved may be our own.

-Buckle up every trip, every time, no matter the distance. And make sure all passengers do the same. There are only 2 questions to ask and answer when it comes to buckling up:

1. Who do you love?

2. Who loves you?

It's all about relationships - preserving these relationships with our loved ones. That's what makes the ultimate difference at the end of each day.

-Be Aware! Drive With Care - Don't engage in distractions while driving - this means all cell phone use, eating, fiddling with technology of any kind, personal grooming, allowing pets to ride on our laps (and certainly children as well).

-Stop completely at each and every stop sign (Stop! Take 3 To See)

-Stop at stop lights

-Don't drink and drive or ride with a driver who has been drinking.

Practicing these behaviors allows us the presence of mind and sight to deal with the unseen obstacles and unknown hazards that routinely pop up out of nowhere whenever we drive. Knowing this, and responding accordingly, allows us to heed the warning, knowing that unseen obstacles and unknown hazards are to be expected. Let each of us drive as if we embrace this truth, just as we look forward to returning home from each and every trip to embrace the ones we love.

Keep Compassion Alive

Dear Friends,

The past few days I had the privilege of representing Keep Kids Alive Drive 25 at a regional conference of The Compassionate Friends (TCF). The Compassionate Friends is committed to grief support in the wake of the death of a child.

Every parent I met at TCF shared a story of the death of a daughter or son. Children died as a result of suicide, of cancer, of heart defects, blood diseases, and many additional medical ailments. Yet, far and away, the majority of parents shared stories of the death of a child as a result of a motor vehicle incident. Some children died as a result of a drunk driver, of speeding, of distracted driving, of not wearing a seat belt, of being backed over, and many other incidents. What all have in common is that they are loved by family who will never forget just how much they care about their son, daughter, brother, sister, grandchild.

Every parent wore a badge with the face of their child. Every child's face invited others to ask, "what is your story?" And stories of great love and compassion flowed, filled with tears, memories, sometimes smiles, and anecdotes about what makes their child unique, special, and loved forever.

It is easy to lose sight of the great love we each have for our children, until a day comes when we cannot hug and hold them, to revel in their ready smile, dry their tears, listen to their fears, and celebrate their goodness along with their accomplishments. Unless we have walked in the shoes of parents who have experienced the death of a child, there is no way we can know, no way we can even begin to approximate, what it feels like to live each day in the absence of one who was, and still is, loved unconditionally, without reservation. What these parents teach us is that even in the midst of cursing the darkness it is possible to light a candle - to let the love that is their child continue to spread goodness, beauty, and truth into a world that is hungry to know all three, and can begin to do so by embracing the wonder, the love, the creativity, the caring, the compassion, and so much more, that children who have died continue to offer us as gift as we live our lives each day.

This reminds me of why Keep Kids Alive Drive 25 exists - to keep compassion alive through each and every action we make behind the wheel. Why? Because each and every action does indeed make a difference in keeping ourselves and others alive so that all have the opportunity to return home to the embrace of the ones we love and the ones who love us.

As many know, each year we engage in a "Run to Remember" up Pike's Peak in honor and memory of all loved ones who have died in motor vehicle incidents. As we prepare for the journey upward on August 20th of this year, I invite you to join in solidarity with the families of all we have encountered through Keep Kids Alive Drive 25 along with all those families we may never meet and put compassion into action each time you get behind the wheel. And what does this compassion look like?

Quite simply, it looks like:

-Putting all distractions aside (cell phones - hands-free included, I-pods, food, make-up, pets, and so much more) and make driving your only priority

-Not speeding, and going slower when kids are around in neighborhoods, or when weather or other conditions dictate that we slow down on any kind of roadway

-Stopping at every stop sign - Stop! Take 3 To See

-Obeying every stop light and other traffic signals and signs

-Buckling up every one, every trip - no matter the distance

-Remembering that "It's not a race, so create space." 29% of injury crashes are the result of poor space management

-Never drinking and driving. It's simple, if you drink, don't drive.

I'm sure you can add dozens of other examples. I hope these few encourage each of us to be aware and drive with care. The person to whom it matters most is waiting for us at home.

The Eyes Have It! Keep Kids Alive!

Research from Virginia Tech demonstrates that the 3 seconds before a crash are the most critical. This is when we need to have our eyes on the road - not on a cell phone, an I-pod, a cup of coffee, a hairbrush, or any other object that constitutes a distraction.

When objects of distraction become the objects of our attraction, we put ourselves in the position of hurting people we have never met, their loved ones, as well as ourselves and our loved ones. Why? All because we decide not to pay attention to the task right in front of us - keeping our eyes on the road and practicing the very best of our driving skills.

When tragedy strikes, we often reminisce with others about how we would love to see our loved one just one more time. We miss who we cannot see. Today, and every day we get behind the wheel we have the opportunity to see, because we can indeed see who and what is in front of us, who and what is around us, and who and what is behind us. It's all there for us to see, if we have not lost sight of why we are behind the wheel in the first place - to navigate as safely as possible on the roads of this world, and to keep ourselves and others safe in the process.

Imagine Being Driven to Keep Kids Alive?

Can you imagine being at the funeral of the father of a friend?

Can you imagine that your friend steps up behind the pulpit to share a eulogy in honor of her father?

Can you imagine her sharing the following?

"My father taught me about how precious and wonderful the gift of life is. You might even say he drove me to it. How did he do this? In a million little moments when he...

...stopped at every stop sign and looked left, looked right, looked left again to make sure the coast was clear. He didn't want to be responsible for hitting a child who suddenly appeared to cross the street while riding a bike, chasing a friend in a neighborhood game, or a neighbor out for a jog.

...never broke the speed limit. We used to pester him to "go faster, go faster. No one will know." But he was always steady in his commitment to observe posted speed limits and to go slower when he saw kids at play, people out walking, when cyclists and skaters were out and about, or when the weather took a turn for the worst. He always said, "Don't let the 2 minutes you think you are saving by going too fast be the last 2 minutes of someone's life." He knew that we all come home to loved ones and what a sad tragedy it would be if someone could not come home to their loved ones.

...never followed too close. He always kept at least a three second cushion between himself and the vehicle in front of him. He taught me that it is the three seconds before a crash that makes all the difference. If you follow to close, you can't react to how others are driving. He would say, "It's not a race, so create space."

...never texted while driving. In fact, we never saw his cell phone when he was in the car. He stashed it in the glove compartment to keep us all safe. We had many great conversations as we drove around town or on trips together. He never let a cell phone distract his attention from the road, from the family he loved, or from every motorist he encountered along the journey.

...always wore his seat belt, even on short trips to the store. He said that "seat belts are fastenating." Why? Because they help to keep us alive so that we can return safely to the ones we love. He made sure that every one in his car was buckled up before backing out of the driveway or pulling away from the curb.

...used his blinker for every turn and every lane change. He just considered it a common courtesy to communicate his intentions to every driver around him. I remember one of his favorite expressions, "be a thinker, use your blinker."

...always did a complete walk-around of the car before backing out of the driveway or a parking spot. He wanted to make sure that no little ones, or even bigger kids, were anywhere near the car. He had read too many accounts of kids who died as a result of being backed over by their own parent, brother, sister, or neighbor, or other loved one.

...never drank a drop of alcohol and then got behind the wheel. He told us that at any one time of day that between 1 and 3 percent of motorists are driving under the influence. He reminded us that this was another reason to create space between ourselves and other vehicles. We couldn't control what others do behind the wheel, but we could leave ourselves enough space to react to how others drive.

....slowed and came to a complete stop whenever that amber light flashed its warning. He also made sure the coast was clear before proceeding when the light turned green. Again, he knew he couldn't control everyone else's behaviors, but he could do all he could to keep himself and others safe. And so he did.

It may seem odd to share these as memories of how Dad taught me to respect my own life and the lives of others, but the road was a classroom in which he taught me so much about the preciousness of each and every person we encounter on the road of life - whether family or friend, or a stranger - a friend we have not yet met.

Dad was always committed to doing all he could to keep kids alive - no matter what their age or where they lived. The street in front of your home was as sacred to him as the street in front of our own.

I ask only one thing as we remember Dad today, and that is for each of us to imagine all that is in our power to do to keep ourselves, our loved ones, and the loved ones of others alive each and every time we get behind the wheel or ride as a passenger in a motor vehicle. Once you imagine it, do it! Dad would love it."

And imagine that this daughter shared her love for her father in the wake of his death due to a driver's carelessness -speeding, talking on a cell phone, running a stop sign, going out of control, jumping a curb - and flying into him while he was out for a walk with his grandkids in the neighborhood.

A Question of Safety - Neighborhood Traffic Safety

I recently heard from a resident in a Texas community who is working with their neighborhood association to lower limits on neighborhood streets to 25 mph (down from the state mandate of 30 mph).

One piece of research that supports their efforts is a report from the General Database of Police Reported Accidents (NHTSA, 1999) which showed that the death rate for pedestrians in 30 mph zones is 3X that of the death rate in 25 mph. Since neighborhoods are typically where kids play, people of all ages walk and ride bikes, it makes sense to create as safe an environment for all who live and visit. After all, in addition to none of us wishing to experience the injury or death of a loved on due to a traffic incident, none of us would want to be behind the wheel and hit someone as well. Creating the safest roadway environment possible takes a concerted effort on the part of each of us - practicing safe driving, pedestrian, cycling, skateboarding, etc behaviors.

A few questions come to mind to assist neighborhood or city organizations committed to neighborhood traffic safety. Here are a few to consider:

What is the purpose of traffic in a neighborhood? Is it to move as quickly as possible or to move us safely to and from our home and family while respecting the lives of all we encounter along the way? (In Europe a concept called "Home Zones" is actively promoted. "Home Zones" see neighborhoods as being safe places for children to play, pedestrians to be out and about, and cyclists to move about safely as well. Motor vehicles are welcome as "guests" into "Home Zones" - that is they are expected to behave as a guest would when visiting your home, taking extra care to be courteous in observing speed limits - and going slower in the presence of people of all ages out and about in the neighborhood- as well as observing stop signs and all rules of the road.) Would your neighborhood want to promote a "Home Zone" type environment that respects pedestrians, children at play, and motorists alike?
What kind of environment do residents want to see on neighborhood streets? Do we want one that commits to a quality of life that promotes residents walking, riding bikes, and children out playing?
What role does parenting play, alongside motorist behavior, in creating safe environments for all impacted by traffic in the neighborhood?
What possibilities exist to engage schools, businesses, and civic organization in supporting neighborhood traffic safety?
What opportunities exists to work in collaboration with local law enforcement, public works, and city planning to develop comprehensive approaches to neighborhood traffic safety?

In short, take advantage of opportunities to be proactive in creating a safe traffic/pedestrian environment for all who live in and visit your neighborhood. This certainly beats being reactive. I have worked with dozens of families whose neighborhoods only took up traffic safety concerns in the wake of a tragic death due to speeding, stop-sign running, or other behaviors. Taking action to prevent tragedy may never yield statistical results since it is impossible to know whose life was saved due to diligence in creating a safe traffic environment for the benefit of all. Perhaps a resident, and transportation engineer for the Texas Transportation Institute says it best when he wrote the following one year after his city - Coppell, TX - lowered their residential limit to 25 mph and utilized "Keep Kids Alive Drive 25" as an educational process to engage residents in changing their behaviors in observing the new limit.

"My community – Coppell, Texas – made headlines two years ago as it tackled this issue. As a traffic engineer by training, I was hesitant of lowering the limit and adopting Keep Kids Alive Drive 25. I lobbied the City Council to consider other engineering, enforcement, and education alternatives so that ‘mobility’ was maintained. I have to say that since this program was adopted and the speed limits on our streets lowered (5 mph) I do feel like I am keeping my village’s children safer, that I am more alert, that I am more in control of my vehicle, that I do share those streets with pedestrians, that my ‘mobility’ has not been greatly impeded, and that streets are not for the sole purpose of drivers in vehicles trying to make their way as quickly as they can in our hurried world."

The latest report from the Governors Highway Safety Association (GHSA) indicates that 1,891 pedestrians died as a result of motor vehicle incidents in the first 6 months of 2010. If the trend continued throughout the year almost 3,800 people would lose their life via the act of walking around - something we may well take for granted.

Good Grief! What Can We Do To Keep Kids Alive?

All around the country we are barraged with news stories and headlines about tragic deaths that we feel helpless to prevent. Who can know when a teenager will snap and kill? See Millard South shooting: Suspension ignited fury. Or, who can know when a mother will forsake herself and her own child? See Lafayette girl called dad 19 times day she died.

In the midst of grief and shock we can stand mystified questioning just what any one of us can do to make a difference and keep kids alive? In the wake of tragic deaths, we can also ask, "What can I do that would make a difference each day to keep kids of all ages alive?"

A simple answer is to do what is in our power to do to keep ourselves and others alive. Simple answers are not always so easy to live out though. An example would be to simply focus on our driving behaviors. Can we manage to go through a day by not speeding, stopping correctly at all stop signs and signals, not tailgate, not engage in any form of distractions that take our focus off the task at hand - driving, make sure everyone is buckled up, and never drink and drive?

If we can do these simple, but necessary, actions each day, we each will have done something meaningful, and do-able, to keep ourselves and others alive.

The question then becomes not only "can we do it," but, "will we do it?"

The answer lies in your decision behind the wheel today.

What Firefighters Can Teach Us About Roadway Safety - Keep Kids Alive!

Note that the key to having no fire fatalities for two years "has been built on better training and education of the public." This is certainly a lesson we all can take to heart in our roadway safety efforts.

Education is considered a key component of the 4 "Es" of traffic safety - Education, Engineering, Enforcement, and Emergency Response. However, oftentimes communities do all they can in the areas of enforcement and engineering, and problems like speeding, stop-sign running, not buckling up, and tailgating persist.

The challenge for all of us in traffic safety day after day after day is to educate the public about the behaviors that promote safe driving once one receives a license to drive. Education must be ongoing. It is much like the need for sports teams or musical groups to practice throughout the season, not just in preparation for the first performance. We can always get better, but not without ongoing education and practice.

Certainly campaigns exist, such as "Click It or Ticket," and "You Drink, You Drive, You Lose" that work to educate the public. These initiatives focus on the consequences for not doing what common sense tells us we should do. Yet, we need only pay attention to news accounts each day telling stories of loved ones whose lives are shattered as they fly out of a vehicle because they were not buckled up or who cause the death of another as a result of drinking and driving.

The companion to "consequential" education is to be pro-active in focusing upon the relational benefits of observing speed limits, stopping at stop signs and stop lights, buckling up, not drinking and driving, or engaging in any of the many behaviors associated with distracted driving. Two questions that come to mind in educating and engaging the public in these efforts are:

Who do you love?

Who loves you?

Put another way:

Who are you coming home to?

Who is coming home to you?

Preserving relationships is what good laws and our adherence to them is all about.

The State of North Dakota in promoting greater seat-belt use by pick-up drivers found that educational messages that are relationally-based have greater success in moving the positive behavior meter forward than does stressing negative consequences. Are we ready to do something positive to educate ourselves and our fellow citizens to reduce traffic deaths - today, next week, in the month ahead, in the next year?

8-Year-Old "Traffic Engineer" Helps Keep Kids Alive & Wins Science Fair

With a little inspiration from "Keep Kids Alive Drive 25," 8 year old Alexis, a student at Dale Mabry Elementary in Tampa, conducted a traffic safety education study that placed first in her school's science fair.

Alexis reports, "Everyone stayed at or below the speed limit of 25 mph. Only one person went over the speed limit. When I put out the sign, there were big changes. One change was that most of the people I was radaring, put their brakes on when they saw me, the sign, or another car. I was really happy to see that. I hope this will continue so that less children and adults don't get injured. I plan to go to my neighbors and tell them about your campaign (Keep Kids Alive Drive 25). Maybe they will tell their neighbors and so on and so on until the entire world knows about your campaign."

A recent phone call prompts this blog. A resident was concerned about the safety of children playing in the street since this is a common occurrence in hisneighborhood. Speaking to parents directly has done little good.

The number one parenting tip from Keep Kids Alive Drive 25 is to not allow children to play in the street - it is not a playground and puts both children and motorists at risk. No motorist wants to be behind the wheel and hit a child.

Little Deeds do Indeed Keep Kids Alive!

I recently came across an essay entitled "Little Seeds, Little Deeds" by Margaret Silf. She shares the story of a 6-year-old girl who heard the prime minister of England speaking of the belt-tightening necessary to help bring the country out of recession. The girl had just lost a baby tooth and had received a pound coin (about $1.60) from the tooth fairy.

Touched by the prime minister's words of concern she taped her coin to a letter and sent it to David Cameron with the request to use it "to make the country better and pay for jobs." Not only had the little girl been touched, but her action touched many deeply. Cameron sent the coin back inviting her to spend it on something nice for herself.

Silf goes on to note, "this story touches a deep truth. A 6-year-old gives away all she has so that someone else might benefit. She has it completely right. Miracles happen when we put the common good before our own personal gratification."

What does this have to do with safe driving?

Every little thing, if we are honest.

The miracle today, or any day, can be a life saved simply because we each choose to do a little deed. A little deed can be:

Stopping at a stop sign (200 pedestrian deaths and 17,000 injuries are attributed to running stop signs)
Observing the speed limit (33% of all traffic deaths are directly caused by speeding)
Not tailgating (29% of crashes are the result of following too close)
Not drinking and driving, driving while intexticated or using a cell phone in any way, or any behaviors that take our eyes of the road, our hands off the wheel, or impair our judgment in any way
Making sure we and all our passengers are buckled up (deaths from traffic incidents could be reduced by 60% or more if only all drivers and passengers were buckled up)

As this holiday season unfolds, be part of a miracle. Engage in one or more little deeds behind the wheel that helps keep the miracle of life alive for your family, for friends, for neighbors, and for people you may never meet wherever you travel.

When you look at your driver's license, what do you see?

Is it simply a license to drive? Or, could it be a license to live?

Dear Friends in Traffic Safety,

Children face greater risk during fall and winter. As 2010 draws to an end, more motorists will find themselves driving to and from work in darkened conditions, both in the morning and the evening. Sadly, tragic news involving children will soon fill local newspaper headlines and television broadcasts. As fall fades into winter, the season is right for drivers to exercise extra caution during throughout residential areas and their daily commute.

Statistics show that children are at greater risk of being in a serious traffic accident after 3 p.m. during the fall and winter months. Extra-curricular activities often end near sundown and darkness can reduce perfect vision to just 20/50. The probability of a fatal crash is three times higher between 9 p.m. and 2 a.m., researchers say.

Do your part to Keep Kids Alive during the dark months ahead. Drivers should inspect their vehicle to ensure that headlights are in proper working order, and keep windshields clear of debris that could limit visibility. Parents can remind their children to walk in groups, use sidewalks whenever possible and to cross the street only at a crosswalk.

According to a study over a 20-year period by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, four times the number of elementary and middle school-aged children were killed by a car or truck on Halloween when compared to all other evenings.
